"Girlfriends"
SOLD

I'm so glad I tried painting patterned fabric - I'm loving it (as you can tell by the last 4 or so paintings). I want the pattern to be part of the painting but not what the painting is about. Does that make sense? I don't want the pattern to be the first thing you notice. I started one yesterday that kind of pushes the pattern envelope.

These pears seemed to be having a conversation. I thought about calling the painting "Gossip" but I like "Girlfriends" better. (They're polite pears doncha know).

"Ethereal Lemons"
SOLD

I tried to keep my brush strokes loose on all parts of this paintings. I think it gives the lemons a light airy feeling.

I bought some new fabric yesterday - this is one of the prints. I like the design but found it hard to paint. The actual design is much more intricate so I simplified it. Also, the lighter part of the fabric is shiny so it does weird things to light and reflections, and the swirl part is fuzzy. I bought 3 different fabrics and they are all this fuzzy, shiny material. I thought about not buying them because of their odd textures but I like the bright colors and interesting patterns.

"3 Lemons"
NFS

I just have to hold on to this one - at least for a little while. Everything I strive for in a painting seemed to come together - the color combinations, loose brush strokes, under painting showing through. I love it.

"Tangelo II"
SOLD

I played with the colors of the fabric making them brighter and more intense. I love the little bits of blue under painting that show through on the fabric. I took some process photos. I wish I would have taken more but I got so involved in the painting that I kept forgetting to take pictures.

"Tangelos"

I'm really enjoying this fabric. I ran out of panels a few days ago. I had one that had been wiped down several times and then painted an opaque orange. It wasn't completely dry so the orange pulled through the light colored cloth quite a bit. I kind of like the effect.

Available: $50 + $10 shipping. Or send me an e-mail.

"Two Favorites"
SOLD

Pears are one of my favorite things to paint and I love this little bowl I bought at Goodwill for 99 cents.

I ran out of canvas panels so this is painted on a 5x7 stretched canvas with gallery edges. You can see a picture of the edge here.

"Dangerous Lemons"
Available $50. E-mail me to purchase.

I've had this fabric for months and have been wanting to try painting it but was intimidated by it. I read this quote by Alfred Adler and thought I should just do it: "The chief danger in life is that you may take too many precautions".

"Garlic Keeper"
SOLD

I ordered some larger panels - 8x10's. I have a hard time keeping my brush strokes loose, especially in a composition like this where there is more going on. I'm hoping the larger format will help.

"Child's Play"

My friend Annie let me borrow this tiny tea cup from her daughters play tea set. I am so thrilled with how this painting turned out that I decided to keep it.

Available: $75 + $10 shipping. Or send me an e-mail.

"Grace"

I tried an orange under painting with this one but it doesn't show through much. For the next time I want to try this, I painted a panel an opaque orange and am going to let it dry completely then try painting on top of it. Not sure what I'm talking about? Michael Pieczonka does this really well. Tiny little bits of the orange peek through in different parts of the painting and really make the colors pop.

Available: $50 + $10 shipping. Or send me an e-mail.

"Pottery & Pear"
SOLD

I'm happy with the way this one turned out. I always want to keep the ones I really like!

I think I'm going hold off on ebay for a while until (if) I get on the Daily Painters site. I get traffic due to links from other artist's sites (thanks guys!) but I'm hoping getting on the Daily Painters site will increase the amount of people viewing my work.

"White Dishes"
SOLD

This is a 1 - 1 1/2 hour painting I did in my workshop with Carol Marine. It's not one of my favorites but my neighbors really liked it.

With all the painting and web work I've been doing lately, I've been having some tenderness in my forearm & wrist. I tried to take it easy yesterday by not painting, but ended up spending several hours on the computer working on sites. Anyone else had this? What did you do?

"Ready for Pickling II"
SOLD

I really like the reflected orange on the lemons but I like the looser brush strokes that the previous painting has.

I started posting my paintings on ebay! I'm so nervous - I hope someone bids. My first listing started yesterday. I also signed up to be part of the Daily Painters Gallery but haven't heard back yet.

I'm happy with the way this painting turned out but I had a little bit of a hard time with the underpainting. This panel had been wiped off several times and was dry but it was a dark indigo color. I found it hard to paint the lemons on top of that dark ground. Also, I think the cucumbers might show up better on a different color cloth. But I'm not sure - I like the coolness the green gives. Maybe I'll try cucumbers with a different background for my next painting.

"Pear with Cobalt Blue Vases"
SOLD

My mom collects cobalt blue glass - some antique, some not. I think the blue looks nice with the light green-yellow pears.

This painting and the previous one have an orange under painting. I like it when under painting show through on the final work but have a hard time accomplishing that look because I tend to over work things sometimes. I like the way both of these have a little bit of orange peeking through.

"Great Grandmothers' Teapot"
Available $50. E-mail me to purchase.

The reflected blue on the teapot looks really pronounced in this photo - much more so than in real life.

This is a teapot that my grandfather bought for his mother. He died when my mom was 4 years old. My grandmother didn't talk about him much at all, so we don't know too much about him other than he was an artist, a heavy drinker and had a nice singing voice (and good taste in teapots).

I don't know if I'm just in vacation mode or what (I'm visiting family in Colorado) but I'm not having much luck with my art this week. I just spent 45 minutes putting different objects on various colors of cloth and nothing really said "paint me, paint me!" I didn't want you to come here for nothing so here's an older pastel painting that I was pleased with. (I know, it's kind of cheating).

Friday, August 03, 2007

So, if you painted your ugliest painting to date, would you show it to anyone? I really had to talk myself into posting this but here goes...(cue music from psycho)

Before you un-bookmark me, hear me out.
* I only spent 1 hour & 15 minutes on this
* I usually paint 6x8s and this is an 8x10
* I usually paint on canvas mounted to hard board - this is gesoed hardboard - it's very, very slick and I hate it.

If anyone wants to say something nice to boost my confidence, now would be a good time! LOL!

Something about this little pear sitting on the pink fabric reminded me of a model from an art class.
